MEN'S JOURNAL X TEPOZÁN

Here’s the best añejo tequila to try now.

To say tequila has been gaining popularity over the last few years is a gross understatement. It’s been barreling along like a freight train. If you don’t consider yourself an aficionado, you may not know there are a few expressions: blanco, reposado, and añejo tequila. Banco is unaged and bottled after distilling, while reposado is aged from two months to a year in oak barrels. These are the most accessible (and typically more affordable) than añejo, especially for mixing up cocktails. But that’s not to say all añejos have to break the bank.

Tepozán tequila has been sustainably made from the same recipe in Jalisco, Mexico, for the last quarter of a century. It’s just three natural ingredients: blue agave, spring water, and yeast. The añejo is aged 14 months in Kentucky white oak bourbon barrels before bottling. Tasting notes include hints of butterscotch, hot peppers, and smoked wood.

LA TIMES X STONE ROAD

Lex Corwin, the 28-year-old founder and chief executive of Stone Road Farms, discusses the challenges — regulatory and otherwise — that face California pot farmers, what it’s like to helm a queer-owned cannabis brand and a look at his plans for the future of his weed-in-the-wilderness spread.

What’s it like to be a craft cannabis cultivator trying to grow legal weed in California? There are probably as many different answers to — and stories about — that as there are pot farms across the Golden State. And one of those stories belongs to Lex Corwin, the 28-year-old founder and chief executive of Stone Road Farms, a brand that has its headquarters in Venice, just steps from the Pacific Ocean, and a cluster of greenhouses 400 miles due north on a remote Nevada City, Calif. hilltop.

Our visit included a frank discussion of the challenges — regulatory and otherwise — that face California pot farmers, what it’s like to helm a queer-owned cannabis brand and a look at Corwin’s plans for the future of his weed-in-the-wilderness spread, a future that includes a cluster of experiential rentals and wine-country-style cannatourism.

The taste of bitter botanical tinctures and sweet and spicy spirits of traditionally alcoholic drinks are becoming more accessible than ever to people who prefer their beverages without the booze.

The nonalcoholic drink market has boomed, especially over the last two years of the pandemic, and now ranges from bottled brands and celebrity-backed labels to spiritless retail shops and beverage directors accommodating high-quality booze-free options beyond sugary mocktails.

As people reconsider their relationship with what they sip, "Good Morning America" tapped a few top players with businesses that are building their brands and fostering a new and intentional cultural shift.

DEZEEN X SUPERETTE

Superette cannabis dispensary in Toronto resembles a retro grocery store

Bold graphics and a checkerboard floor feature in a Superette marijuana shop in Toronto, which was created by the brand's in-house team in collaboration with Canadian designer Emily Robin.

Based in Toronto, Superette was founded in 2019 by entrepreneurs Mimi Lam and Drummond Munro. The company now operates six brick-and-mortar shops in Canada and plans to open locations in the United States next year.

Aiming to make "buying cannabis as enjoyable as consuming it", the company has prioritised creating products and retail environments that have a nostalgic feel. Bodegas, pharmacies and hardware stores are among the influences.

The retailer's latest shop is located at Stackt Market, a shopping complex made of shipping containers in downtown Toronto. Billed as the company's first "SuperMarket", the new 800-square-metre space has a look that mimics a classic grocery store.

PSYCHEDELIC TIMES X JON HOPKINS

A Trip Report of Jon Hopkins’ Music for Psychedelic Therapy

In the year 2021 at the Fair Market venue in Austin, Texas, and on the autumnal equinox, I attended An Equinox Immersion in Sound hosted by Aubrey Marcus featuring a ceremonial concert performance with musical producers East Forest and Jon Hopkins. In 2019, East Forest released the highly lauded Music for Mushrooms album, a five hour sonic journey crafted to accompany, support, and accentuate a psilocybin mushroom journey. At this equinox event, Jon Hopkins was debuting his own psychedelic-assisted album, Music for Psychedelic Therapy.

It must be said that the title of Jon’s new album is, at first glance, presumptive and banal. And yet, dear reader, as I will do my best to convey, it is the perfect title. Just think of Leonardo da Vinci deciding to name the Mona Lisa Person. And yet, perhaps, a better title would simply be Psychedelic Therapy, because this experience is not so simple as to be called music—nor can it even be called art. It is something much, much more.

THE GUARDIAN X JON HOPKINS

How music is being used in healing psychedelic trips

Two hundred psychedelic enthusiasts have converged in Austin, Texas for a “ceremonial concert” on the autumn equinox. People sprawl on yoga mats around a circular stage as staffers pace the candlelit warehouse, jingling bells and spritzing essential oils. While psychedelic drugs are prohibited, some attenders seem in an altered state, lying on their backs and breathing heavily as rumbles of bass from Jon Hopkins’ upcoming album, Music for Psychedelic Therapy, shakes the hushed space.

With Music for Psychedelic Therapy, Hopkins is the latest arrival in a growing pool of artists, academics, and entrepreneurs shaping psychedelic research and therapy with music. Psychedelia sprang from the LSD-spiked waters of 1960s counterculture, as the Grateful Dead, the Doors and Pink Floyd drenched the charts in washed-out reverb, loopy lyrics and sinuous sitars. Today’s psychedelia has been digitally modernised for the streaming era – and, as with so much counterculture, increasingly commodified. A lucrative new market is emerging for music designed for therapeutic trips using ketamine, psilocybin, MDMA and other psychotropic drugs. And from AI-driven apps to underground DJ mixes, the musical expression is as diverse and subjective as a psychedelic experience itself.

ROLLING STONE X THE ANCESTOR PROJECT

As the world of psychedelics matures to include both a grassroots movement and a burgeoning legal industry — echoing the process that cannabis went through a few years ago — many are wondering what kinds of new jobs will become available in the psychedelic space. Will psychedelics come to resemble most other mainstream, corporate North American industries — or can we expect something that more reflects the spirit and ethos of the medicines that have been used for generations?

Big Weed Drama & News

Personally, my week is off to a great start after a crossing of grass-related wires resulted in me receiving this extremely creative press release from a landscaping company; what I wouldn’t do to get a peek at the tags I’m filed under at mainstream PR agencies.

If you could use a little lift to start the week, there’s a new Broccoli Talk episode up now! My co-host Mennlay Aggrey chats with Yogi Maharaj, founder of Luv Kush Co, a community platform for Desi weed lovers. Yogi shares the story of how Hindu deities created bhang—the original cannabis edible—and teaches us about early weed cultivation in India, touching on the plant’s deep roots there across social, spiritual, and geographical spheres.

The Best Cannabis Edibles of 2020

It’s been a decidedly great year for weed. We’ve had states like New Jersey and Arizona legalize, Congress passed the MORE act which puts another dent into federal prohibition, and dispensaries and other cannabis businesses were designated as “essential” amidst the pandemic.

I am here to share my learnings with you young Padawan, walk with me as we look back at the best-infused treats, beverages, and ingestibles of the year.

As always, the factors that make for an outstanding edible are: consistency in cannabinoid content, accurate dosing (with a reliable THC:CBD ratio), freshness, flavor, onset, duration, labeling, and packaging.

45 Stylish Gifts That Any Cannabis Enthusiast Can Appreciate

If it feels like the world of cannabis (marijuana) has matured, you’re not imagining it. More and more, cannabis users are beginning to favor beautifully made ceramic pipes, high-tech vaporizers, and stash boxes that feel like they’re actually meant to be seen.

That’s obviously thanks, at least in part, to the growing legalization movement in the United States. In fact, just last month, New York became the latest state to legalize the use of recreational marijuana. The rise in cannabis products is also thanks to the ever-expanding world of CBD, a compound in cannabis that doesn’t get you high but can be found in food, skin-care products, bath soaks, and a million other places, introducing many more people to the world of cannabinoids than would ever visit a dispensary.

The 21 Best Weed and CBD Gifts

With states like Oregon decriminalizing small amounts of illegal drugs and legalizing psilocybin, you could say the true winner of the 2020 election was drugs. And nothing won bigger than cannabis. New Jersey, Arizona, South Dakota, and Montana have approved it for recreational use, while Mississippi will be offering it for certain medical conditions. Right now, you’re more likely to live in a state that has some form of legalized cannabis than not. And even if you can’t get weed, hemp-based CBD is readily available across the country.

But if you’re new to all this, it can be confusing. What’s the difference between hemp-derived CBD and marijuana-derived CBD? If you live in a state where cannabis is available recreationally like Massachusetts, does that mean your friend in California can ship you some weed? And on a much more basic level: What should you buy to deal with all the stress of this year?

15 Gifts for the Sophisticated Stoner

Stoners are complex individuals. Plagued by stereotypes of laziness and perceived as having a lack of motivation, they’re perpetually misunderstood. But the stoners of today are not solely of the Jeff Spicoli and Dazed and Confused variety, wayward teenagers still yet to embark on their lives. Rather, today’s stoners are often highly-functional and successful adults who just so happen to enjoy the frequent joint or bong rip.

Just as the stoner has evolved, so too have the means and methods by which they smoke or ingest the herb. Gone (hopefully) are the days of rigging an apple into a makeshift pipe or painstakingly cutting up a nug, as there now exists a wide market of high-end, aesthetically pleasing weed-related products — products that at first glance look like they have nothing to do with getting zooted.
